The amount of time it takes to process a claim for disability from initial application through the hearing with an Administrative Law Judge is approximately 2 years unless you have a particular situation that may qualify you to be reviewed by the judge earlier.

a. During the initial application review, Social Security will usually send you to one of their doctors. It is important that you go to the scheduled appointment. The initial application process takes 90 to 120 days.

b. At times, Social Security may send you to another doctor during the second appeal stage, Request for Reconsideration. The second appeal level usually takes 120 days.
